Watchers in Death

I'll come right out and say it...I never really cared much for the Deathwatch Space Marines.

A quick D&D side project

A few former colleagues from when I was at Blizzard Entertainment have a regular Dungeons & Dragons group. Whenever they start up a new campaign, I'll inevitably get requests for painted models which I'm always happy to do.  Here is one of the main characters I completed. She requested magical runes on the book pages, purple fire and glowing blue eyes.  It's probably one of my favorite models I've ever painted as I felt the book and face came out particularly well.  I learned a lot about glazes and blending while trying to make the eye glow look more radiating and less like blue splotches.

Just a few more completed Horus Heresy characters

Been doing a few commissions for a friend of mine.  When I say a few, he has commissioned me to paint one of each of the Horus Heresy Character Series models.  It's been a rather daunting task but has been thoroughly enjoyable.

Here are a few more of the recently completed characters:

Emperor's Children - Lord Commander Eidolon

Night Lords - 1st Captain Sevatar

Iron Hands - Primarch Ferrus Manus

Knights Errant - Nathaniel Garro

Bonus models:

Completed a set of Sons of Horus Reavers to accompany the Horus Lupercal model I'm working on

Heresy Era Thousand Sons Leviathan Dreadnought

Having picked up one of these murder machines, I've been debating to paint it either in Blood Angels red or Thousand Sons. In the end I went with the sorcerers of Prospero since I have a Deredeo Dreadnought in IX regalia already. Will write up a proper tutorial once it's finished.

The Horus Heresy Character Series - Completed Models

It's unfortunate that I haven't had much time to consistently update this blog with painting progress.  In fact, I hadn't realized how many Horus Heresy models I had actually completed until I decided to write this post. So this post is to catalog and show which models from the Forge World Horus Heresy Character Series I've completed, along with a list of which ones I have left to paint.

XV Legion Thousand Sons metallic armor tutorial

I've recently switched gears from painting my beloved Blood Angels and started working on a Legion that I, and many other fans, have been waiting for for a very long time:  The Thousand Sons.  There's something tragic about their story, how they were loyal and still were turned upon by the very father he tried to warn about Horus' betrayal.

One thing I love what Forge World did was try to create a distinct visual cue for each Legion.  There are already several red-colored legions (Blood Angels, Word Bearers, Thousand Sons, and eventually World Eaters) so rather than doing a flat red that is the trademark Blood Angels scheme, they made each red army different so they're recognizable.

Here's the recipe I used to recreate that candy red armor that Forge World uses for their own Thousand Sons models on their website.

Vallejo Chipping Medium - Creating weathering effects

I've recently discovered Vallejo's chipping medium.  This stuff is frakking boss.  I was never able to paint on natural-looking weathering effects, but this gave me renewed confidence in painting skills. I thought I had plateaued a while so it's nice to have a new tool under my belt to use now.

Vulkan, Primarch of the XVIII Legion Salamanders

Finally finished Primarch Vulkan, possibly one of the coolest models of the Heresy line.
